A Clear Look at Veneers
There’s a specific kind of frustration that comes with having teeth that look fine from a distance but bother you up close. Chips, stains that don’t respond to whitening, slightly uneven edges, and small gaps. None of it is a dental emergency, but it can make you more careful about smiling in photos or laughing openly in conversation. Veneers in Quinlan at Parkway Family Dental offer a way to address those cosmetic concerns with results that look natural and last for years.
What Are Dental Veneers?
Veneers are thin shells, typically made from porcelain or composite resin, that bond to the front surface of your teeth. They cover imperfections without requiring extensive reshaping of the underlying tooth, and they’re custom-made to match the size, shape, and shade that looks right for your face.
Porcelain veneers are the most popular choice because they closely mimic the light-reflecting properties of natural enamel. They resist staining well and hold up to daily wear. Composite veneers are applied directly to the tooth in a single visit, making them a faster and more affordable option, though they typically don’t last as long as porcelain veneers.
We also offer Lumineers, a specific brand of ultra-thin porcelain veneers that require little to no tooth enamel removal before placement. For patients who want a reversible or minimally invasive option, Lumineers are worth discussing during your consultation.
What Veneers Can Fix
Veneers are versatile, which is why they’re among the most requested cosmetic treatments we offer. They work well for:
Veneers aren’t the right solution for every cosmetic concern. Severely misaligned teeth, significant structural damage, or active gum disease may need to be addressed differently or first. During your consultation, we’ll examine your teeth and provide an honest assessment of whether veneers are a good fit or if another approach would serve you better.
- Teeth that are permanently stained or discolored and don’t respond to professional whitening
- Chipped or slightly cracked teeth that affect the look of your smile
- Teeth that are worn down from grinding or years of use
- Minor gaps between teeth that you’d rather not address with orthodontics
- Teeth that are slightly uneven, short, or oddly shaped
- Teeth that look too small relative to your gums or the rest of your smile
The Veneer Placement Process
Getting traditional porcelain veneers typically requires two appointments.
At the first visit, we prepare the teeth by removing a thin layer of enamel from the front surface. This step is necessary to make room for the veneer so it sits flush with the surrounding teeth rather than looking bulky. Impressions are taken and sent to a dental lab, and temporary veneers are placed while your permanent ones are being fabricated.
At the second visit, the temporaries come off, and we check the fit and color of the permanent veneers before bonding them in place. Small adjustments can be made before the final bonding is done.
Lumineers require less enamel removal, sometimes none at all, because they’re designed to be thin enough to bond directly over the existing tooth surface. The process is similar but less involved on the preparation side.
How Long Do Veneers Last?
Porcelain veneers typically last between ten and twenty years with proper care. Lumineers have a similar expected lifespan. Composite veneers are less durable and may need to be touched up or replaced after five to seven years.
How you care for your veneers matters quite a bit. A few things that extend their lifespan:
Veneers don’t require any special maintenance beyond what you’d do for your natural teeth, but consistent care makes a real difference in how long they hold up.
- Avoid biting into very hard foods, such as ice, hard candy, or uncut crusty bread.
- Wear a night guard if you grind your teeth, as this can put significant pressure on your veneers.
- Brush with a non-abrasive toothpaste to avoid dulling the surface over time.
- Keep up with regular cleanings to keep the gum tissue around your veneers healthy.
Veneers and Your Overall Oral Health
Cosmetic work, such as veneers, is most successful when the foundation is solid. Active cavities, gum disease, or significant bone loss need to be treated before veneer placement. This isn’t just a formality. Veneers placed over unhealthy teeth or gums won’t last, and underlying problems will only get worse if they’re covered up rather than addressed.
Dr. Sheela Thomas evaluates the full picture before recommending veneers, ensuring your teeth and gums are in good shape. For patients with periodontal concerns that need attention before cosmetic work, Dr. Loiseau’s expertise as a periodontist is available as part of our care team.
